Technical college of Jutland
Introduction
Technical College Of Jutland is a modern technical college where the best traditions of craftsmanship unite with the latest technological know-how. The college comprises a vocational school and a technical academy, both based in Hadsten. It is the story of a self-governing institution, founded in 1928 by a body of empoyers’ organizations aiming at a technical boarding school with close ties to the trade committees.
Today, the institution numbers approx. 3,300 apprentices, students and in-service trainees on a yearly basis, corresponding to some 500 annual participants. Still a boarding school, it houses some 380 people, be it in boarding house, student hostel, junior apartment or in TCJ´s own course accomodation property.
Hadsten is the home of various schools, so even though the town population amounts to no
more than 6000 inhabitants, it comprises six other educational institutions.
Lines of education
As its starting point, TCJ´s range of educations has the concept of a vertical image of education, close ties to the trades and the idea of nation-wide school and training. Within selected fields TCJ offers all levels, from basic vocational course to engineer levels. This point of reference is considered vital to maintain optimum quality.
As to vocational training, apprentices of the following trades are educated:
- electricians
- carpenters / thatchers
- plastics processing operators
- refrigeration technicians
The apprentices come from firms throughout the country, and during their stay they are accomodated in the boarding house. The apprentices are from 17-18 years of age to even 40 when they embark upon their education. Total length of education amounts to 4- 4½ years, of which 4-6 school intervals total approx. one year. Technical Academy provides further education in electrical and HWS engineering (plumbing), both lines offering the option of obtaining an authorization. Students are typically 23-28 of age, though some are in their thirties and more.
Courses are 2 years, and students graduate as AK- engineer. The academy students stay in junior hostels administrated by the TCJ institution. Both Technical College as well as Technical Academy offer labour market courses to skilled workers, technicians etc. These are in-service and further training courses of fairly short duration, one or two weeks. This programme features about 100 items within the four lines of business that are serviced: electrics, construction, refrigeration, plastics. Furthermore, TCJ offers an approved restaurant at their disposal.
The campus idea
At the college you ”live” education. Contrary to most other technical schools and academies, TCJ is a boarding school where apprentices and students live and stay. In the design of the American campus-model, the needs of all the students can be covered within the area. Accomodation, sports facilities, restaurant, fitness center, pool, café, etc. – everything is there to create an environment of living education.
We are convinced that boarding school, from an educational point of view, is a valuable idea. It simply generates a different attitude to studying, being there all the time. Far most of the time is naturally passed thinking and talking subjects and matters. There is always a helping hand at arm´s length - strong and personal networks can be made.
Furthermore, freedom and responsibility of studying result in a good environment, where vandalism and grafitti are things unknown.
Through the college´s computer network it is an option to work one´s projects at the students´ residence. This does not mean that those who stay elsewhere are left in the lurch. All students are provided with electronic admission cards, giving them access to most facilities and emphasizing the idea of a 24-hour college.
